Message by Lise Grande, United Nations Resident Coordinator
On behalf of the UN family in India, we are delighted to welcome you to the UN Solution Exchange Gender Community’s blog. We hope that you will find the experience informative, interactive and engaging.
Since its inception in 2005, the Gender Community has served as a platform for practitioners to collaborate and share innovations, knowledge, skills, and best practices on gender equality, women’s empowerment, child rights and protection, gender mainstreaming and rights-based approaches to development.
Allow us to acknowledge the contribution of each one of our 4,500 members and contributors form government, policy and research institutions, the academy, NGOs and professional associations for making the Gender Community one of the most vibrant and innovative Communities of Practice. Your contribution and inputs have added value to government policies and bills, programme interventions, strategies, and campaigns on gender issues.
We feel privileged that a number of Commissions and Ministries of the Government including the Planning Commission, National Commission for Women, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, National Mission for Empowerment of Women, and National Advisory Council have made use of the Community’s knowledge-based services.
Through this blog, the Gender Community aims to further strengthen networking among practitioners, raise awareness on gender issues, and share experiences that motivate “stories of change.”
We hope that you will use this exciting space to write about your impressions and provide feedback on the work of the Gender Community, so that together we can be more effective in our collective objective of gender equality. We hope that this blog creates a multiplier effect, so that we are constantly adding to the dynamic pool of policymakers and practitioners.
We would like to express our appreciation to UNICEF and UN Women for facilitating the Gender Community, and for this new initiative.
Lise Grande,
UN Resident Coordinator

Dear Lise, Malika and the UN Women Team, Since its beginning in 2005, I have seen the Gender Community grow and discuss many grassroots and policy issues and contribute to the debate about women's equality and empowerment in more ways than one. I congratulate you on starting the blog, and other innovative partnerships, such as the one with PACS, and earlier, with ILO's Convergence agaisnt Child Labour project. With all good wishes that we will see an interactive blog develop soon. Smita Premchander (Sampark, Bangalore), and a Resource Group member of the Gender Community.
